Dr. Maria Montessori (1870- 1952), one of the most important educators of our time, emphasized the need for early education. Montessori preschools provide a program especially suited to the needs of the child. With materials that have been developed specifically for the Montessori Classroom, the method offers individual attention to the holistic development of the child: emotionally, socially, intellectually and physically. Dr. Montessori's educational theories are based on natural laws of development. These theories emphasize that each child experiences sensitive periods of learning during their lives and that it is important that they are exposed to an enriched environment. In the Montessori prepared environment, the children are the center of education, with a program adapted to their interests and needs. As a result, children concentrate with enthusiasm and achieve a real and profound understanding of task- oriented learning. This intellectual progress is accompanied by emotional growth. The child develops independence, self-confidence, self-discipline and learns skills needed for higher education. The Montessori teacher gives both group and individual presentations of the specialized educational materials. The self-correcting materials help the children develop motor and sensory skills, lengthening concentration span, and discovering problem-solving techniques.
